AWARD FINALIST
Entheóphage by Drema Deòraich

A global virus is changing children’s brains and making them more empathetic

Stacey is a 2024 finalist for the Valorious Awards for emerging narrators in science fiction for this performance.

Isobel Fallon has found a way to help her son suffering from a neurological disorder, but harvesting the coral for his treatment is going to have consequences far beyond the disruption of one ecosystem on a small reef. CDC researcher Nadine Parker is baffled. A child has contracted a bizarre new virus that leaves her screaming in pain over the health of the planet.  But she can't identify the source, not in her, nor in the dozens, then hundreds, and finally millions of children worldwide succumbing to the same virus. Are the children sick, though, or are they…evolving?

Drema Deòraich is a writer of speculative fiction that asks big questions. Her debut novel Entheóphage (or Phagey to its friends) released in October of 2022, and was nominated for the 2023 Ursula Le Guin prize. Fallen, The first book in Drema’s Founder’s Seed trilogy comes out in May 2024.

Storm Over Warlock by Andre Norton

Explorers battle tempests — external and internal — to forge a sustainable future

When a Terran outpost is destroyed by the menacing, insectoid Throgs, two human (and two wolverine) survivors must find a way to survive being hunted on a hostile planet. Only an unlikely alliance with the telepathic, saurian inhabitants — and the wisdom to distinguish between dreams and reality — will lead them out of darkness and towards a united future.

Andre Alice Norton (1912 – 2005) was an American writer of science fiction and fantasy. During a career that spanned over 70 years and 300 speculative fiction titles, she earned the World Fantasy Award for lifetime achievement, the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America Grand Master Award, was twice nominated for Hugo Awards, and was the first woman inducted into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame.

Lud-in-the-Mist by Hope Mirrlees

In the land of Dorimare, on the shores of the Dapple and the Dawl, the law-abiding residents of Lud-in-the-Mist are plagued by an illegal influx of fairy fruit. When respectable Mayor Nathaniel Chanticleer is entangled in the scandal, he must call upon both his sharp legal mind and his unacknowledged creative spirit to craft a reconciliation with the Faerie.

Fairy fruit entices citizens to poetry, dancing, and dangerous flights of fancy.

(Helen) Hope Mirrlees (1887 – 1978) was a British poet, novelist, and translator. A contemporary of J.R.R. Tolkien, Mirrlees’ third and final novel set a high bar for high fantasy. Author Neil Gaiman calls Lud-in-the-Mist “a little golden miracle of a book.” And Mirrlees’ friend Virginia Woolf described her as, “her own heroine – capricious, exacting, exquisite, very learned, and beautifully dressed.”

Even if it goes against the laws of the agency and royally pisses off Zandro Hrom — her infuriatingly sexy and stubborn thunder god ex. With Chrys' dragon bursting out, angry incubi on her heels, and the world’s most annoying devil-spawn as her ally, She's running out of time.
